New Leaders Council

Leading the Way

Over the past few years, New Leaders Council has earned its stripes as the nation’s premier political leadership development institute. This year is no different, with NLC hosting over 30 Institutes across the country, training hundreds of new leaders in the essential skills they need to build a long-term progressive infrastructure. With all of this success, the question becomes “What’s next?”

Today, I am pleased to announce a tremendously exciting new step in NLC’s journey:The NLC Legal Institute.

This year NLC is partnering with the Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC) to identify a new generation of progressive legal practitioners. Twenty promising attorneys from across the state will participate in six days of intensive training in the nuts and bolts of furthering the progressive legal mission.

These twenty Fellows from across California will receive the highest caliber training in progressive legal ethics, passing legislation, securing and advancing voting rights, influencing administrative agencies, and a host of other essential topics for furthering the progressive legal mission. This new corps of trained progressive legal practitioners will help the progressive community secure its ideas, fight off attacks, and secure equal justice under the law.

For now, the program is limited to CAOC members in good standing in California, but it will serve as a template for building a national network of progressive legal professionals dedicated to advancing equal justice for all.

Of course, this would not be possible without the innovative and dedicated work of our partners at CAOC. In particular, I would would like to thank Shawn Khorrami, Micha Liberty, and the entire CAOC executive committee for their vision in putting this program together, and Laurie Klimchock for her dedication to implementing that vision. We look forward to great success with them in this new program.
